It’s been 18-months since Windows 11 entered the OS market
Originally announced on the June 24, 2021, a first preview was released to Windows Insiders on June 28, 2021. The public release of Windows 11 began on October 5, 2021.
Released on October 5, 2021, Windows 11 is the successor to, unsurprisingly, Windows 10 and is currently available as a free upgrade for eligible devices. Windows 11 features a new design, improved performance, and a number of new features, including a centred Start menu, Snap Layouts, and a new taskbar.

Whether or not you should upgrade to Windows 11 depends on a few factors, including your current computer’s hardware, your needs, and your preferences.

If your computer is relatively new and has TPM 2.0: If your computer was purchased recently, and you know that it came with a TPM 2.0 chip, then you can safely upgrade. You should still verify that your computer meets the necessary specifications, but if it has the TPM 2.0 chip it’s probably fine. You can technically install Windows 11 on a computer that doesn’t have TPM 2.0, but it isn’t recommended.
You want or need the protection of TPM 2.0: Windows 11 uses the TPM 2.0 chip to enable new security features, like preventing malware from gaining access to encryption keys, credentials, and other crucial data. If you want or need this extra protection, you’ll need to upgrade.
Computers built before 2014 won’t have TPM 2.0 because that’s when it was first introduced.
What features are important to you?
Windows 11 has a number of new features, such as a redesigned, more streamlined Start menu, a new taskbar, and support for Android apps. If these features are important to you, then upgrading to Windows 11 may be a good idea. However, these features may not be important to everyone. If you are happy with your current computer and operating system, there is no immediate need to upgrade to Windows 11.
Windows 11 looks and feels like a fresh coat of paint on Windows 10, but there are some features that you won’t get without upgrading.
The Start menu in Windows 11 it is a bit more simplistic. You only see a list of apps, followed by your most frequent documents at the bottom. Live Tiles are gone in Windows 11, which makes the Start menu look much tidier. As for the Taskbar, Microsoft has collapsed the search box into an icon and also removed the Cortana function. The other big change also involves moving the weather in the Taskbar to the left side of the screen.
Windows 11 only offered minor changes from Windows 10 when it first launched, but it has received steady updates and tweaks since then. Performance isn’t that different from Windows 10, but it sports a more streamlined, modern look, and a number of new features that may make the upgrade worth it to you.
What About Security?
Windows 11 is a newer operating system, which means that it is more secure than Windows 10. Microsoft has been working to improve the security of Windows 11 since its release, and it is likely that the operating system will continue to be updated and improved in the future.
So should I upgrade?
Are you comfortable with change? Upgrading to a new operating system can be a major change. If you are not comfortable with change, then you may want to wait a while before upgrading to Windows 11.
